Akadot Retail, whom I've bought reliably with in the past, but do not work for, is having a sale on all DMP books. I think only the latest releases are full price.

More here, with suggestions.

OMG, I can't believe we did that...! [20 Aug 2008|06:07pm]

Story time? Please?

I'm having a bad spine day. (Fallout from a useful PT session yesterday. I'm trying to be optimistic, I really like what we're doing, I'm just a little broken right now.)

So... anyone have any stories about crazy stuff they've done, especially the stuff that looks crazier looking back on it? Like, maybe, the careful testing of exactly how invisible lesbians are at Microsoft (particularly Redwest E). Or the one about getting the call from the campus cop because she found some people harvesting what they thought were hallucinogenic mushrooms, and she thought I'd like to know where. Or the one where I ended up dancing on a table and getting money tucked in my, uh, hipband...

Which I only mention because I figure if I don't prime the pump y'all will be much more reticent...

Sunday-- Suddenly, I'm an adult! [20 Aug 2008|12:26pm]

Sunday started with a flurry of getting Kouryou-chan fed and packed and ready for summer camp. This is the first year that she's been able to go for an overnight camp, and Omaha and I are so happy to suddenly have an entire week to ourselves without children. We're not even sure what we're going to do with ourselves, but we've already planned, if the weather permits, to head out to the peninsula for a day or two of mountain biking.

Sunday evening we went to the very lovely wedding of Chris & Brenda, two friends we've known for a while. It was held at the pagan circle at the Longhouse, and afterward we had a buffet dinner and were serenaded by Skinny White Chick, which was a blast in itself. Yamaraashi-chan will be jealous.

Anyone got a tutorial? [20 Aug 2008|07:00pm]

Okay okay, I should probably know how to do this. But how on Earth do you doa french braid? (I need pictures and demonstrations my spatial awareness and co-ordination skills are soemwhat absent)

I mean I know how to do a normal braid I can even (badly) sort of do a 5 strand braid I can do many braids but one simple french braid? nope. Which is a pain because it's useful and very recently my friend put my hair up into two french braids as part of a rather awesome looking (slightly vintage) updo that I'd love to (but am failing abysmally) to re-create.

somewhat late in the day but example of the funky up do )

Frizzy hair! [20 Aug 2008|10:16am]

Anyone have problematic frizzy hair? How do you deal with it? My hairdresser recommended a weekly raw egg soak, but that gave me stringy hair and left me smelling suspiciously of wet dog, so I guess it didn't agree with my hair. :P

If it helps: BSL hair, slightly wavy, fine hair but lots of it, very oily scalp.

Thanks, Everyone!

Anyone out there have a spare PCIe video power cable? I have a 'bad-ass' video card that I received for free, but it apparently cannot run at 'full pow-wah!' without said cable.

Bueler? Fry? If I need to pay for it, so be it.

Advice? [20 Aug 2008|11:20am]

My hair is about mid-shoulder blade currently. I'm having a problem though. My hair is normally very curly and thick but since the birth of my daughter (18 months ago!) It has straightened out, and gotten much thinner. I dont mind it being straight, however, I am still dealing with massive amounts of hair loss. Every time I run my hands through it, Im getting at least 10 hairs. When i brush it, it fills the brush to the point i have to clean it out. It is healthy though, healthier than ever. Its soft, shiny and has come a long way from where it was.
a pic and explination under here )

I need ideas for things to do with my hair, while hiding the length. I normally keep it up in hair clips, tucked under so you cant tell how long it is. The reason i do this is because I love the reaction i get when i do let it down on rare occasions. Im not sure that it is long enough for hair sticks yet (getting some tonight to try out). I do want some ideas for buns that will work at the length i have. Thanks in advance!

MEME: Go over to Wikipedia and enter your birth date (month/day) and then pick 3 events, 2 births and 1 holiday that occurred on the day of your birthday. Then post the results.

Three Events:

1528 - Shipwrecked Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca becomes the first known European to set foot in Texas.
1861 - American Civil War: Jefferson Davis is elected president of the Confederate States of America.
1913 - Mohandas Gandhi is arrested while leading a march of Indian miners in South Africa.

Two Births:
1854 - John Philip Sousa, American composer (d. 1932)
1970 - Ethan Hawke, American actor

One Holiday:
Finland - The Finnish Swedish Heritage Day and an official flag day.

*smiles* There has to be one for every week, right? Every month? Something like that.

All I know is that I woke up early today, saw my partner off to work, got breakfast, started laundry, deposited money, returned and checked out new library books, bought boot & shoe laces and a carnation, and made it all home before eleven in the morning.

I rock. :)

Plus, it smells like autumn outside today. I'm so happy, I could jump for joy. I might. I need a fall icon. Anyone feeling a bit bored and creative?

August is more than half-way done. What do you wish to accomplish before September 1st (no matter how tiny you may think it is)?

- Peace.

Hairstick help, please! [20 Aug 2008|01:22am]

longhair

[kawaiimae]
Okay, I know Icing/Claire's hairtoys are cheap and fairly useless, but I really do need some help here.

Some time ago, at an Icing far away from my hometown (which only has a Claire's), I ran into these metal hairsticks, a matched pair of a pewter-seeming straight metal rod with matching roses on the end. They're breakable as all heck (the rose broke off of one and I had to re-apply it with this plastic 'soldering glue') and they're too short and they're horrible as they always are...

...but I own them because I dragged my boyfriend of two years into the store and he noticed them in a corner and thinks they're absolutely beautiful for my hair. Okay, I'm sold.

He thinks my hair looks best with pairs of hair sticks, with a braided bun that I've created. It's a pinless Chinese-style braided bun, but since my hair is so slick, I have to elastic the end of the braid before bunning it and then slide a second stick through the last piece of braid through the bun; this can hold all friggin' day long. Thing is, this makes the first stick redundant and want to slide out of my hair a lot; since it's redundant and I have ridiculously sleek hair, I often don't feel it sliding out (especially with these ultra-thin hairsticks).

Fast forward to a few days later; I'm proudly wearing my snazzy hair sticks hand-picked by my boyfriend in my favorite style, and I run into a little car trouble. The car's fine in the end, but it seems sometime in the process the redundant hairstick slid out...onto the shoulder of the highway, over 100 miles from home. It's not in the car, or anything convenient like that, so it's basically lost forever.

I really badly want to find the match to this hairstick, due to the sentimental value. And soon, because our two year anniversary is in a month and I'd like to wear it to dinner that night. eBay gives me nothing, and I've got no access to an Icing, and I kinda doubt Claire's would have anything this *nice*.

So: Does anyone have a hairstick matching this description they'd like to give away or sell to me? (As I said, I know these hairsticks actually suck, so I understand if you find them useless.) Does anyone know a way to buy them? (The Icing site doesn't sell stuff, apparently, and Claire's doesn't list them at all.) I'd really appreciate any generosity and help I could get right now!

EDIT: For those looking for a picture, [info]azn_enchantress has been kind enough to show one in the comments.

Seriously Bad Elf Ale
Well, after the trauma of the mall, Kouryou-chan and I picked Omaha up from the airport (she'd been in Vegas, Baby! for four days at a business convention) and, without even pausing to stop by the house, hurtled up to a friend's house for a lovely housewarming. They've been slowly building the place out from the walls; they bought it for a song, and it was barely worth that, with all the animal products and cigarette smoke that was embedded and layered everywhere. They have new subfloors and bare drywall around the bathroom and major bedrooms, and that's quite the improvement. Good enough to justify a housewarming.

And they even thought of me and had a bottle of Seriously Bad Elf Beer. When other people at the party who didn't know me asked why this was funny, I had to explain my name and that whole "unauthorized reindeer games" incident that got me kicked out of the workshop. Blitzen really does like his eggnog, especially when it goes in the other end...

It was more than a year ago that my friend, with whom I was doing a year-long seminar in embodied child psychotherapies said to me: "you should apply for this position at my job". I applied for that position, I got it. We (me and my friend) had some complications in settling into work with each other. We are still dealing with those complications. But I feel like things have been shifting, slightly. If nothing else, she and I have been able to focus our efforts on the places where we're most cooperative. I feel like she's been ... trying.

And I've been trying to let her try, but things have gotten STRANGE. I got a facebook message from one of the social workers on the unit, and it's like -- oh, I can handle a bit of this shift, but I can't help you deal better with these people, difficult co-worker. And, as much as I've been dodging the reality, she's making mistakes. And it's ... difficult to make 'mistakes' in this environment where everything is 'iffy'.

It's just this strange double-trap, where I'm trying to be more generous to a co-worker, and she's burning bridges left and right. And I'm weirdly stuck, because I don't necessarily WANT her to mess up, but I can't help her if she walks off the plank by herself. And I'm trying to think more positively about her. And instead I'm getting invitations to cut her off at the knees. Oh well. What shall we do? :)

I voted!
I don't care that it's a purely administrative position, I still say it's really weird seeing my wife's name on the ballot. And yes, I did vote for her.

I will admit to skipping most of the judicial elections entirely; I didn't know enough about either candidate to decide which one I'd rather not see.
